The Mission Statement of AzLA

The mission of the Arizona Library Association shall be to promote library service and librarianship in libraries of all types in the state of Arizona.

AzLA Accomplishments

  • Developed statewide materials purchasing contracts
  • Lobbied and obtained the end of use taxes on books
  • Provide continuing education credits for school librarians
  • Sponsor the Horner Fellowship
  • Provide regional forums to obtain statewide input to the association
  • Nominate young librarians to the Snowbird Leadership Institute

Join this interactive webinar to learn how citizen science empowers people of all ages and backgrounds to contribute to real scientific research. From observing wildlife to analyzing medical data, discover how local participation can drive global impact.

We’ll showcase a variety of citizen science event formats—including workshops, nature walks, and virtual projects—that you can adapt to your library or community setting. You'll leave with practical tips, tools, and strategies to run engaging programs and foster collaboration between scientists and volunteers.

Explore how the SciStarter platform connects your community to projects, tracks participation, and offers resources for organizing impactful events. Plus, learn about professional development opportunities through the Citizen and Community Science Library Network and the self-paced SciStarter Ambassador training.

Whether you’re new to citizen science or ready to expand your efforts, this session will equip you to inspire curiosity, encourage participation, and support a movement where everyone can make a difference.

Presenter: 

Emma Giles is the Director of Programs and Operations at SciStarter, where she leads global campaigns like Citizen Science Month and One Million Acts of Science, and coordinates events such as the “SciStarter LIVE” webinar series and SciStarter Ambassador professional development events sessions. She works with partners including NASA, Science Friday, and community based organizations like libraries to expand public access to citizen science. Emma is also the lead instructor for Community Science courses at ASU’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College. A former 5th grade science teacher and Earthwatch "Teach Earth" Fellow, Emma holds a Master’s in Science & Technology Policy from ASU and studied climate science at the University of Vienna Summer Institute.
